Aim of the NET’s English Corner
The aim of the NET’s English Corner is to provide students with engaging English language activities that foster their interest in the language, cultivate active learning habits, and enhance overall language proficiency. Located in Room 212, the space is thoughtfully designed to be warm and welcoming for all students. Beyond this dedicated room, the English Corner is not limited to a physical space—it extends across the entire campus as a floating idea to bring language learning everywhere. Working side-by-side with our Native-speaking English Teacher (NET), the English Department organizes vibrant initiatives throughout the academic year to encourage students to use English naturally beyond the classroom.
Key initiatives include:
English Friday & Lunchtime Fun: Dynamic weekly lunchtime activities led by our NET and English Ambassadors to keep the campus energetic and immersive.
Campus English Atmosphere: Dedicated English Ambassadors actively promoting conversational English and encouraging peers to speak English around campus.
School Clubs: Focused extracurricular groups, including the English Debate Team, English Drama Club, and English Club.
Flagship Competitions: Opportunities to showcase talent in major inter-school contests, such as the Filmit 2026–2027 Competition, Speak Up – Act Out Drama Competition 2026–2027, Public Speaking Competition 2026–2027, and Hong Kong Model United Nations (HKMUN 2026-2027) tournament, etc.

English Friday: Bringing Language to Life
English Friday is one of our school’s cornerstone language initiatives, designed to create an immersive, high-energy environment where students can practise English naturally and confidently across campus.
1. Morning Assembly: Building Public Speaking Confidence
Every Friday morning begins with an engaging assembly session led by our Native-speaking English Teacher, Mr. Singh, alongside a rotating panel of 3 to 4 student speakers.
Interactive Dialogue: Students join Mr. Singh on stage for live interviews, story sharing, and topical discussions.
Building Confidence: Providing a supportive platform for students to overcome stage fright and develop public speaking skills in front of their peers.

2. Lunchtime English Activities: Fun, Games & Collaboration
During lunchtime, the English Corner transforms into an active learning hub with hands-on games and interactive challenges.
Popular Lunchtime Games
Jeopardy: Test general knowledge, vocabulary, and quick thinking in a team-based quiz setup.

Halloween Bingo & Trick or Treat: Festive specials that blend cultural celebrations with language learning.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
Mental Health Day Workshop: Partnering with other school departments to host well-being workshops in English, helping students learn about mindfulness, stress management, and emotional wellness while building practical vocabulary.
Many more lunchtime activities to come throughout the school year

English Café: Casual Chats, Real Confidence
The English Café offers an informal, friendly space for students to chat naturally with our Native-speaking English Teacher, Mr. Singh, during 1st and 2nd recess.
Instead of a traditional classroom setup, Mr. Singh spends recess hanging around the School Hall, making it easy for students to approach him for a relaxed conversation about everyday life, hobbies, current events, or anything on their mind! Goals:
Natural Flow of Speaking: Designed to help students step away from textbook English and develop spontaneous, natural conversational skills over time.
Low-Pressure Environment: Students are free to drop by, chat, and practice speaking at their own pace without the fear of making mistakes.
HKDSE Speaking Practice: A popular resource for Form 6 students seeking one-on-one or small-group practice for their HKDSE English Language Oral Examination.
Building Lifelong Confidence: Encourages students to view English not just as an academic subject, but as a practical tool for everyday communication.
“Whether you want to practise for your upcoming HKDSE Speaking exam or simply talk about your favorite movies, drop by the School Hall during recess and say hello to Mr. Singh!”

Competitions
1. Speak Up – Act Out Drama Competition 2026-2027
Organized by the Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) Section of the Education Bureau (EDB), Speak Up – Act Out is an interactive drama competition where teams of 4 to 6 students devise a short, 4-to-5-minute drama based on a given stimulus. The performance relies on pure acting skills, voice expression, and teamwork—without formal sets, costumes, or written scripts.
Benefits:
Spontaneous Communication: Performing without a fixed script trains students to think on their feet and express themselves fluently under pressure.
Conquering Stage Fright: Regular performance exposure builds lifelong confidence when speaking in front of large audiences, directly benefiting future academic presentations and job interviews.

2. Filmit Competition 2026-2027
The Filmit Competition is a flagship video-making contest run by the EDB’s NET Section that challenges students to write, act in, direct, and edit original short films (1-minute or 3-to-5-minute entries) centered around a specified theme.
Benefits:
Modern Media & Digital Literacy: Storytelling through film prepares students for modern careers in media, communications, marketing, and technology.
Project Management & Collaboration: Producing a film requires clear planning, role delegation, time management, and problem-solving—skills that are essential in both university and workplace environments.

3. Public Speaking Competition 2026-2027
Public Speaking competitions challenge students to prepare, deliver, and defend speeches on a variety of personal, global, or societal topics. Participants are evaluated on speech structure, persuasive power, vocal variety, pace, eye contact, and audience engagement.
Benefits:
Leadership & Persuasion: Mastering public speaking teaches students how to articulate ideas clearly, persuade others, and step into leadership roles with authority.
Academic & Career Advantage: Strong oral communication skills provide a significant edge in university admissions interviews (such as HKDSE oral components and tertiary interviews) and future professional settings.

We invite you to stay tuned for our upcoming programs as Ju Ching Chu Secondary School (Yuen Long) continues to cultivate language proficiency, nurture global perspectives, and celebrate student achievement.
